Not sure of the tree, the focus seems to be on the bay window behind rather than the tree itself, could you take another please. Do, however, edit your question and remove your email address - unless you like SPAM!

Looks like some sort of evergreen, possibly a Cypress., pruned into a lollipop. To be frank it looks ugly so I suggest replacing it with something pretty.

Thank you, just moved in and I'm concerned that it might grow too tall. If it doesn't i'd probably shape it and plant other shrubs next to it...

I'm not sure you could shape that into anything attractive and as the ground looks to be pretty impoverished wouldn't think any shrubs will do well. I'd dig it out give the bed a good feed of organic matter and start from scratch.

Blimey Botanic, each to their own. They might like it.

Hi, welcome to GoY, as Badfish says, the choice is yours, but as for whether it will grow too tall or not, depends on what is too tall, which again is your choice, Derek.

Thanks for the tips. How would I find out what tree this is? Earlier i was looking for some kind of app, only to come across an app which recognises leafs-not very useful. It'd be great if there was an app, which tells you the name of trees from pictures...

Well cypress has been suggested and that would be my best guess. Do a Google search on and click on images... you see plenty of pictures.

Agree with Moongrower.
It looks like one of the conifers that start off green to the base but has had all the lower branches removed. This might be because that's what the owner wanted or it might be because they went brown and looked unsightly, which is a big drawback of conifers.
As for shaping it, depends what you mean. This kind of tree can't be cut back beyond the green growth as it will not regenerate. And there are much prettier trees.

I'd still remove... sorry it is not an attractive tree

Thank you- it seems like the vote is unanimous here- it's ugly and needs to be removed! I'll get my axe out this weekend. Can anyone suggest an evergreen shrub/ very small tree with bright foliage? Something beautiful
that is.

The first thing you need to do is to remove all the roots and then seriously feed the soil...

You are doing the right thing in removing it. The beauty of these trees is its form and that has been removed badly. May I suggest a Photinia or Holly Tree to replace it?

Pieris forest Flame is evergreen, has red spring foliage and also tassels of white flowers. It is more bush shaped than tree shaped. it will slowly grow quite tall if you want it to but responds well to cutting back so you can keep it to the size you want.

If you like the shape of your conifer you can get attractive standard hollies that are quite small., There is a golden one with red berries - look at Hywel's blogs, he showed one a few months ago in his garden.
