Plant ID please! Pretty sure it's a CA native. It has been here for many, many years. Was used as a privacy hedge in several places but now only has top growth. Can I cut it low in early spring and expect it to bounce back well with fuller growth? Thanks!

It sure looks like Abelia g. Cut it down flush with the ground and then expect it to come back with a vengeance if that's what you desire. Otherwise just trim it to keep it neat and tidy.

Maybe answering my own question: glossy Abelia grandiflora? If so, not native, I guess. How much can I chop off, ya think?
