Why are several different white flowering plants (e.g. climbing rose, peony) in the same area of my garden starting to produce pink flowers?

I'm not very familiar with peonies, but I do know that many varieties of white rose will develop a pink tint in unusually hot or unusually chilly weather. Also, since many white varieties of flowers were found as bud sports of their original colors--often pink--mutating back to the original color is relatively easy.
